Introduction to each hour (Same introduction used everyday unless stated)

  • O God, come to my aid;
  • O Lord, make haste to help me
  • Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. world without end. Amen.

Opening Hymn (Same hymn used for Week 2 Midday Prayer);

Come, Holy Spirit, live in us
With God the Father and the Son,
And grant us your abundant grace
To sanctify and make us one.

May mind and tongue made strong in love
Your praise throughout the world proclaim,
And may that love within our hearts
Set fire to others with its flame.

Most blessèd Trinity of love,
For whom the heart of man was made,
To you be praise in timeless song,
And everlasting homage paid.

Psalmody

Anthipon 1 : Fresh and green are the pastures where the Lord gives me repose

Psalm 23

The Lordis my shepherd,
I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

Anthipon 1 : Fresh and green are the pastures where the Lord gives me repose

Anthipon 2 : In Israel the name of the Lord is great

Psalm 76

God is renowned in Judah;
in Israel his name is great.
His tent is in Salem,
his dwelling place in Zion.
There he broke the flashing arrows,
the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.

You are radiant with light,
more majestic than mountains rich with game.
The valiant lie plundered, they sleep their last sleep;
not one of the warriors can lift his hands.
At your rebuke, God of Jacob,
both horse and chariot lie still.

Anthipon 2 : In Israel the name of the Lord is great

Anthipon 3: The earth in terrort was still when God arose to judge.

II

You, you alone, strike terror.
Who shall stand when your anger is roused?
You uttered your sentence from the heavens;
the earth in terror was still
when God arose to judge,
to save the humble of the earth.

Men’s anger will serve to praise you;
its survivors surround you in joy.
Make vows to your God and fulfill them.
Let all pay tribute to him who strikes terror,
who cuts short the life of princes,
who strikes terror in the kings of the earth.

Anthipon 3 : He carried out sins in his own body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to holiness

Scripture (Rom 8:26)

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Short Responsory

  • Lord, let my cry come before you
  • Teach me by your words
  • Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. world without end. Amen.

Concluding Prayer

Almighty, ever living God,
you gave our Saviour the command
to become man and undergo the Cross
as an example of humility for all men to follow.
We have the lessons of his sufferings
give us also the fellowship of his resurrection.

Conclusion of the hours (Repeated at every hour of the day except at night)

We make our prayer our Lord Jesus Christ your son, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the holy spirit, one God forever and ever.

May the lord bless us, keep us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen
